CP of Bohemia and Moravia, Statement of the EC on the Vote of the Czech Republic’s Senate Concerning the US Radar Base on the Czech Territory

On its session on Thursday, November 27th, 2008, the Senate of the Czech Republic has passed Agreements about establishing of US military base in the Czech Republic. Charles Schwarzenberg, the Czech Minister of Foreign Affairs, gave a commentary on this fact by saying: “It is an important message for the world, for Europe, but also for our nation.” He is right – it is the message, namely very, very bad one.
Arrogantly, fully in contradiction with both a desire of 70% of the Czech citizens and non-affirmative standpoints of numerous both Czech and foreign experts, the government strives to enforce its own hugely dangerous commitments, may be financially evaluated, towards some representatives of the expired administration of US President Bush. Our right-wing government coalition acts by the principle “When we are dead and gone, who cares!” What’s more, there is a danger threatening that backstage agreements between the Civic Democratic Party and Social Democratic Party about peaceful governing on the levels of both the centre and some districts can make possible, by help of some new official defectors, a breaking of the parliamentary majority which stands against the radar base at present.
Inconsistent with the decision of this year’s Bucharest NATO summit, which has postponed a discussion on this theme until next year, in view of the possibility that the new US President may change notions of the US anti-missile defence, as well as in view of the internal disputes, the government of the Czech Republic continues to enforce an obsolete defence conception of the United States even at the price of violation of sovereignty of our country. Today almost nobody believes the assertions that the US system of strategic defence is not intent against the Russian Federation, but against some disobedient states. A government’s pressure and the decision of the Senate could bring non-quantifiable consequences not only for the Czech business sphere in the Russian Federation and in other states of the Union of Independent States.
The scandalous irresponsible decision of the Senate majority requires to strengthen a pressure by all both non-parliamentary and parliamentary activists towards the MPs of the Czech Republic” Let’s protect our national interests! Let’s stop a sale of our security! The Czech Republic must not be a figure on the geo-political chessboard of Pentagon’s blinded planners, who can sacrifice the pawn in the Middle Europe on behalf of their own games and interests whenever they choose. Why should the Czech Republic be the target of all those who feel themselves threatened by the aggressiveness of Washington?
That’s why the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia insists, that those, who are concerned - the citizens of this country, should decide on the basic change of the Czech Republic position in the world and European security architecture. The referendum is the only democratic way to decide on the presence of the foreign troops on our territory.
