Mr. Prime Minister:

We are writing to lodge our vehement opposition to the flagrant and completely unwarranted attempt of the Senate of the Czech Republic to strip the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (CPBM) of its legal standing and right to participate in the political life of your country. The CPBM is a widely-respected and supported political organization in the Czech Republic, and this outrageous assault smacks of the worst sort of partisanship and McCarthyism.

This recent action comes on the heels of the failed attempt to ban the Czech Communist Youth (KSM), and yet your Government has learned nothing from this experience. We are confident that all democratic-minded Czech citizens will reject this crude and self-serving move, and will exact a heavy price at the first opportunity, unless your Government reconsiders its course and withdraws these fallacious charges against the CPBM.

There is no place for anti-communist repression in any “democracy†worthy of the name. Our Party expresses its unreserved solidarity with the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia and its supporters, and will do everything possible to bring this nefarious attack to the attention of the Canadian people.

Sincerely yours,

Miguel Figueroa,

Central Executive Committee,
