The visit of the Greek Prime Minister Giorgos Papandreou to the USA was followed by the celebrations of the media. However, these celebrations have nothing to do with the people’s interests.

In its statement on the results of the Papandreou-Obama meeting the Press Bureau of the CC of KKE refers:

“The celebrations of the government have nothing to do with the people and their interests. The statements of G. Papandreou that Greece participates in the war against “international terrorism” and that it shares common values with the USA mean that the Greek plutocracy and its political staff will participate more decisively in the offensive of the imperialists-terrorists against the people. On this basis the US president will support the government of PASOK.

The political support by B. Obama means supporting the war that the Greek government in cooperation with the EU and the other bourgeois parties has declared against the people, supporting the  abolition of the any gains that have remained for the working class and the deterioration of the conditions in employment and wages.

Everything indicates that the government of PASOK made serious concessions in return which are at the expense of the sovereignty of the country and in favour of the promotion of the imperialist plans in the region. The government must tell the people about the commitments it  made towards the claims of the US as regards the oil exploration by the Greek and Turkish plutocracy, the accession of Aegean in the plans of the anti-missile shield as well as the claims for the legitimatization of the so called “grey zones” in the Aegean Sea.

The government of PASOK must tell the people about its role in the more active support of the US interests in the Balkans, in the recognition of Kossovo independence, in the utilisation of FYROM as a protectorate so as the US capitals control the natural resources, the natural gas and oil routes.

According to the despicable agreements, legitimizing the surveillance of the Greek people (fingerprints, DNA, personal data etc) by the US “anti-terrorist” agencies,  the waiving of VISA, - presented by the Greek government as a gain- means the control and supervision of the Greek airports and agencies by the US agencies and the presence of armed agents in the transatlantic flights.

The disengagement of our country from the rivalries of the monopoly groups in the region, from the imperialist plans and contradictions must become a primary goal of the people’s and workers’ movement. They must be a constituent part of the struggle for the overthrow of the anti-people’s policy and the strategic choices that serve the interests of the monopolies”.
