Your Excellency,

We would like to draw your attention to the following.

In your country attempts are made to ban the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSCM).  As you know in size the third party in your country.

These anticommunist proposals are not new. They come from the same circles that before played a leading role in banning the Czech Communist Youth Association (KSM). This attempt fits in a long row of attacks on communists and their parties in East European countries and of restrictions imposed on the communist ideology and its symbols, as recently also in Poland.

The offensive against the KSCM takes place immediately after the campaigns in commemoration of the opening of the Berlin Wall, in which continuously is emphasized how democratic the EU is. However, the restriction of the free expression of the communist body of thought is anything but democratic.

During this campaign communism and fascism are put on a par, a blatant denial of the fight against fascism and for democracy that so many communists in Europe fought and died in.

We would like to point out to you that for a working democracy banning a party that has proved defending democratic values and participates amply in parliament, or limiting its expression of opinion creates a dangerous precedent and is in itself a threat to the democratic quality of the Czech Republic and the EU.

We count on:

  • The immediate ending of all steps against the communists in the Czech Republic;

  • The immediate ending of all threats to and restrictions of the communist party, marxism-leninism and the communist symbols.

Besides, we ask your government to respect these democratic demands and turn them into legislation.

Yours faithfully,

J. Pruijser

Your Excellency,

We would like to draw your attention to the following.

Do you know that in the Czech Republic – an EU country - attempts are made to ban the Communist Party of  Bohemia and Moravia (KSCM)? In size the third party in that country.

These anticommunist proposals come from the same circles that before played a leading role in banning the Czech Communist Youth Association (KSM). This attempt fits in a long row of attacks on communists and their parties in East European countries and of restrictions imposed on the communist ideology and its symbols, as recently also in Poland.

The offensive against the KSCM takes place immediately after the campaigns in commemoration of the opening of the Berlin Wall, in which continuously the democratic quality of the EU is emphasized. However, the restriction of the free expression of the communist body of thought in the Czech Republic is anything but democratic, and is not combatted by the EU and/or the Dutch governement.

This latter surprises us even more because communists, like Marcus Bakker who recently deceased and was commemorated amply in parliament, during many years have been members of the Dutch parliament and still take an active part in some local councils.

During this campaign communism and fascism are put on a par. A blatant denial of the fight against fascism and for democracy, that so many communists in Europe, in the Netherlands too, fought and died in.

We expect that you agree with us that for a correctly working democracy banning a party that has proved defending democratic values and participates amply in the parliament of a European member state, or limiting its expression of opinion creates a dangerous precedent and is in itself a threat to the democratic quality of the EU.

We expext that you act in favour of:

  • The immediate ending of all steps against the communists in the Czech Republic;

  • The immediate ending of banning communist parties wherever;

  • The immediate ending of all threats to and restrictions of communist parties, marxism-leninism and the communist symbols.

Besides, we ask you to strain every nerve to defend these democratic demands at the EU level and turn them into legislation. We would like to be informed of the steps you will take against the attempts in some European countries to ban democratically elected communist parties.

A copy of this letter will be sent to the parties represented in the Dutch parliament.

Yours faithfully,

J. Pruijser

Party chairman
