In the last weeks we are seeing how the workers' and popular response to the measures that the various governments of the European Union countries are applying to get out of a deep economic crisis that is the result of the outdated capitalist model is growing.

The European governments, headed by Germany and the international structures of capitalism such as the International Monetary Fund or the European Commission, are applying harsh adjustment measures to pursue the stated aim of reducing the public deficit to the objectives set by the Stability Pact. .

In the end, these measures are designed to load, in the most brutal way, the whole weight of the capitalist crisis on the backs of the working class and the popular sectors, who are seeing their living and working conditions worsen inexorably.

The strategy of the European governments, fully committed to satisfy the interests of the oligarchy, consists in most European countries mainly in delaying the retirement age, wage cuts, higher indirect taxes, the destruction of the public care systems, the destruction of the collective labour relations and flexibility in working conditions, plus many other measures that affect the daily life of the working class and the popular sectors.

Given this savage attack on the labour and social rights of the majority, the response of the working class and the popular has not been long in coming. This is proved by the continuous strikes that have taken place throughout this year in Greece, led by the All Workers Militant Front (PAME) and the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), the strikes and large demonstrations in France which are now being an example of resistance and popular organization against Sarkozy's proposals to delay the retirement age, the next general strike in Portugal, organized by the CGTP, which on November 24 will paralyze the fraternal country, the growing response to the austerity plan introduced by the British government last week, the continuing protests in Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, and the general strike in Spain which showed that the working class starts to respond to the continuing attacks from a government that responds to the oligarchy and big capital.

The Central Committee of the PCPE considers all these struggles at country level should be confined to a broader process of organized response to the measures promoted under the umbrella of the EU and in full harmony with the objectives of international capitalism mainly represented by the IMF. Progress is needed on the intensification of cooperation between communist and workers' parties of Europe to raise the level of confrontation between the working class and popular sectors with economic and political structures that try to save capitalism at the expense of the majority of the population.

The working class and popular struggle against the capitalist crisis, moreover, can not be only a response to specific attacks, but has to experience a qualitative leap in order to put into question an entire system that condemns us to poverty and also pursues and punishes all those fighters who oppose it.

At the same time, this global struggle against an outdated system like capitalism must face the imperialistic tools that oppress the peoples and subject them to the dictates of capital. Thus, the fight against this tool of imperialism which is the European Union has to be intensified, but also against other institutions such as NATO, the maximum expression of the abuser and murderer character of capitalism. In this regard, we fully support the great mobilization that our comrades of the Portuguese Communist Party are preparing for 19 and 20 November in Lisbon, coinciding with the summit of this organization.

For the CC of the PCPE, the struggle against the capitalist crisis is fully linked to the the fight against the capitalist system, which now has shown its historical boundaries and has proven to be the main enemy of humanity. PCPE's proposal defends the construction of a model in which the people's and working class needs are the priorities, in which the economy serves the people and not the other way round. PCPE's proposal necessarily involves the construction of a new society, the socialist society.
