The Convention drew delegates from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. The Party celebrating its 85th anniversary received greetings of solidarity from 40 fraternal parties. Representatives of the Cuban government and Communist Party and leaders of the Communist Party USA attended and addressed the delegates. An Iranian worker read a statement from the Tudeh Party of Iran outlining the complex situation in his country. Other highlights included greetings from a representative of the Canadian Peace Alliance and Barbara Jackman, a lawyer representing Canadians and immigrants held under the notorious Bill C 36 certificates of incarceration. A highlight of the convention was the attendance and participation of a contingent of youth working towards a re-founding convention of the Young Communist League in the Spring.
The Convention was preceded by a three month pre-convention discussion of the Main Resolution outlining the Party’s position on the international situation, the Canadian political scene, and party and press building.
The delegates approved a plan of work that includes a decision to field 25 candidates when the federal election is called. The party elected a new central committee and reaffirmed Miguel Figueroa as leader.
