Defeat Harper’s US-NATO-EU-Israeli War Agenda in Canada If We Seek to Help the Revolutionary Masses of Arabian Peninsula, North Africa and the Middle East

Don Currie, Chair CPS

February 2, 2011

The meeting this Friday between Prime Minister Harper and President Obama takes place as the people of Egypt demonstrate in the streets of Cairo to oust a US stooge and steelworkers demonstrate in the streets of Hamilton against a US corporate giant for their economic and political rights. While giving ample media coverage , often confusing and misleading, to events in Egypt, the private corporate controlled media and the CBC blacked out the reports of ten thousand trade unionists and their supporters demonstrating against US Steel in Canada against its attempts to rob Canadian steelworkers of their pension benefits and to roll back union gains. [1]

What is happening in Cairo and Hamilton is what has happened in Greece, and throughout Europe and Asia, and is now spreading throughout the Middle East. The masses are on the move against state monopoly capitalism, with or without the approval of corporate power and the political stooges that do their bidding.

Mubarak of Egypt for 30 years received a cool $1.5 billion US annually and Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel accepts annual payments of $2.55 billion US annually from whatever US administration happens to be in power. That is how the US administration works. That is what it believes. Everything and everybody has its price.

When Prime Minister Harper leaves Washington on Friday, a deal will have been struck on a range of issues negotiated in secret. What the whole deal is and what is the price that Canadian people will have to pay will be kept under wraps. One thing is certain, Harper has pledged to ram through Parliament a $9 billion deal to buy 65 F35 fighter jets with the bill eventually rising to $16 billion. Canadian Defense Minister Peter McKay and US Defense Minister Robert Gates flogged the deal only three days before Harper left for Washington. [2]

Last year Israel did a similar deal with Washington and purchased 20 F35’s for $2.7 billion. In all 100’s of these fighter aircraft are being purchased by the US, Canadian and Israeli governments. Why? [3] Because of inter-operability within US-NATO-EU armed forces. These aircraft are designed to be used against the people of the Middle East to protect Israel’s military and political dominance in the region. Canada as a NATO partner will be committed to be part of any NATO-US-Israeli plan of perpetual war against the Arab world and their quest for freedom and independence.

That is what Prime Minister Harper doesn’t want to discuss publicly with the people of Canada. He seeks to cloud the real purpose of the purchase of the jets, a commitment to NATO to participate in future wars and to have the hardware to do it.

Solidarity with the revolutionary upsurge in Africa and the Middle east is expressed concretely. Genuine internationalism means to defeat the Harper Government and do it now! That is the message every Canadian who stands with the working people of Egypt, Palestine, Jordan, Yemen, Tunisia and all those, including the people of Israel who oppose their government’s expansionist policy, must send to the government and the opposition parties.

The opposition parties are demanding that any deal cut by Harper in Washington be brought to Parliament for debate. What will the Liberals and the NDP and the Bloc do if a deal has been struck in secret. What if a deal has already been inked that involves handing over aspects of Canadian border security to the likes of Joseph Lieberman leader of Homeland Security in the US Senate?

Jack Layton is wrong. Harper must be defeated to prevent a $9 billion purchase of F35 jets to be used in future NATO wars. Harper must be defeated if Canadian sovereignty over Canada’s border is to be decided in Canada. There is no made-in-Washington deal that is supportable, and there is no deal in Parliament with a Flaherty budge that is supportable.

Harper Out Now!

Left Turn Canada!
