This Globe and Mail article by Patrick Martin  http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/russia-stands-shoulder-to-shoulder-with-besieged-syrian-leader/article2302589/  s informative and one of the first by a Canadian bourgeois journalist that attempts to cut through the NATO propaganda and to analyze the contending forces and in particular the stance of Russia. The Government of Cyprus is headed by a Communist. Its position is difficult because Turkey, a member of NATO,  is fomenting an internal crisis on that strategically positioned island while at the same time as it is colluding with the USA and NATO to impose a no fly zone over Syria as was done over Libya.

Israel is deeply involved in fomenting the internal crisis in Syria to cover up the economic and democratic demands of its own Occupy Movement and of course it’s continued illegal occupation of the Golan Heights and its defiance of world public condemnation of settlement expansion.

Russia has a naval base in Syria and is not likely to be pushed out so easily and seems prepared to again veto any UN-NATO scheme to intervene and impose the US organized and Canadian Government backed SNC puppet regime. Russia’s proposals for a peaceful path must not be dismissed out of hand. Is there a better proposal on the table?

The situation is not a simple replay of the Libyan tragedy and there may be the opportunity if the left progressive forces act and not just denounce, to force the Obama and Harper Governments to reassess. There is no doubt that the Republicans and right wing Democrats mired in a sham election battle, would love another war as they approach another presidential election so they can play the phony patriotism card and extol and promote more military spending.

The same thing will take place in Canada where Harper is running into opposition over his plans to privatize health care, reduce pensions and spend lavishly on the military.

The Harper Government thus far is taking its Syrian foreign policy cue from Washington as it always does. However, Syria is not Libya and the opposition parties in the Canadian Parliament and in particular the NDP must be told in no uncertain terms, not to back another Libyan type intervention in Syria fraught with the danger of evolving into a major US-NATO-Israeli war on Iran with the potential for the use of nuclear weapons.

CPS calls upon Communist Party of Canada (CPC) leader Miguel Figueroa and Communist Party of the United States of America (CPUSA) leader Sam Webb and the leaders of all of the left progressive peace forces of our two countries to issue joint statements now, directed to our respective governments and opposition parties, as well as to the organized labour, peace and democratic movements to reject any and all US-Canadian-NATO schemes for regime change war in Syria.

Now is the time for the Communists to speak out and effectively. We cannot go to IMCWP Meetings and make speeches and then come home and forget what it is that we agreed to jointly do. http://www.peoplesvoice.ca/Pv01ja12.html#JSOCIALISM

We must call for a Canadian foreign policy of peace not NATO war and regime change! Now is the time to do it!

PRIME MINISTER HARPER, PRESIDENT OBAMA! HANDS OFF SYRIA! NO MORE US-CANADIAN NATO WARS! THE PEOPLE OF NORTH AMERICA WANT PEACE – NOT NUCLEAR WAR!
